New option emerges for Giannis Antetokounmpo as he considers Bucks future

After playing hard-ball on the contract extension for Jonathan Kuminga, are the Warriors planning a move for the 2021 MVP?

Update:

What next for Giannis Antetokounmpo? For the first time in his incredible 12-year career with the Milwaukee Bucks, it has looked like a move away is a genuine possibility.

The nine-time NBA All-Star led the Bucks to a championship in 2021 but the team has regressed in recent years. At the end of the 2024/25 season ESPN reported that Giannis is willing to “explore” a trade.

A few months on, the only team who is yet to complete a single signing this offseason are the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors have been playing hard-ball on the contract extension for Jonathan Kuminga, potentially freeing them up for a play for Giannis.

The San Francisco Standard reports: “Like every other smart team, [the Warriors are] trying to maintain every asset they’ve got so they’re ready once and if the Giannis Antetokounmpo market heats up.”

But would a move for the Bucks star make sense? Bringing in Giannis Antetokounmpo would certainly be a franchise-defining move, combining one of the league’s most dominant two-way players with Stephen Curry’s elite shooting.

Giannis brings size, physicality and relentless energy on both ends of the floor. With Draymond Green no longer able to anchor the defense like he once did, Giannis would instantly give Golden State a better defensive option and a real transition threat.

As this Warriors team attempts to transition away from its championship peak, bringing in a 30-year-old superstar with elite pedigree would help to ensure they remain contenders in the West. Signing Giannis would also rejuvenate the fan base, draw national attention and signal that the franchise is committed to chasing more titles in the Curry era.
