WE ARE UNDERWAY FROM THE BAY!!!
Warriors starting five
The Warriors are going small to start the game tonight from the Chase Center. It's Curry, Paul and Thompson in the back court with Kuminga and Looney down low.
Nuggets starters
When this team is healthy we know who their starters are going to be. They are healthy and their starters are all featured in the first five. It's Murray, KCP, MPJ, Gordon and Jokic to begin the night in the Bay.
NBA Standings
Taking a look at the standings in the West coming into tonight, we see the Nuggets hovering around the top of the table at 24-11 through the first 35 games of the season. That puts them just a game back of the conference leaders, the Minnesota Timberwolves who are 24-9. In between them is the up and coming OKC Thunder, and behind the Nuggets sit the Clippers, Kings and Pelicans. Sitting all the way down at 11th, which would keep them out of the Play-In Tournament if the season ended today are the Golden State Warriors at 16-17. They are only 8 games back of first place, but the way things are going, it looks the Warriors are going to be in a season long battle to keep their head above water in the West.
What's Curry got cookin?
The Warriors may be struggling this season, but it would be hard to blame their shortcomings on Steph Curry. The 35 year old has played in 31 of Golden State’s 33 games and is leading his team in scoring with 27.6 point per game while adding 4.4 rebounds and 4.6 assists while shooting right around his career average from the field and from downtown. He isn’t getting much help in the scoring department, Klay Thompson is the next leading scorer with 16.7 ppg, while Kuminga and Wiggins are getting just over 12 an outing.
Joker takes the Bay
The Nuggets are coming off of their first NBA title in franchise history, and they have a base that is built to be in the running for a dynasty for the years to come. Obviously the anchor of this team is their two time MVP Nikola Jokic who leads this team in points rebounds and assists. His 25.7 points, 12.3 rebounds and 9.1 assists are more than enough than to put him in the conversation to win his third MVP, in fact his numbers this year are better across the board than he put up in his first MVP season. In his second MVP season he averaged a point and a half more, a half rebound more but more than an assists less. It’s going to be a two horse race for the MVP award again this season but as we know Jokic will be more worried about getting a second NBA title than a third MVP.
Denver's last game
Denver wrapped up a four game home stretch with a comfortable win over the Hornets at Ball Arena. The game was tied at halftime after the Nuggets took a six point lead after the first 12 minutes and the Hornets pulled level in the second. Denver came out of the break and pulled ahead with a 40-17 third quarter that they started on a 20-2 run. Jamal Murray led the Nuggets with 25 points and seven assists and Michael Porter Jr. added another 22 as the Hornets dropped their 11th straight loss.
Golden State's last game
Golden State got their first win of the new year as Steph Curry led the way with 36 points in a narrow win over the Warriors. Each team shared their portion of the lead for the first three quarters, but no lead climbed into double digits until the Warriors took a 11 point advantage in the fourth quarter. The Magic would make a late run to tighten the game up in the final minutes but Curry’s 36 points led a Warriors starting five in which each ended up in double digits and that was too much for Orlando as Golden State snapped a three game losing streak.
