The Pacers buckled down on defense in the second half and the shots stopped falling for the Clippers. The win in LA bring Indiana that much closer to the top four in the East. It's a quick turn around tonight and Rick Carlisle is going with Haliburton, Turner, Nembhard, Sheppard and Siakam down low tonight in LA.
Nothing changes to the starting five for Ty Lue, despite Russ Westebrook's return. He will come off the bench as Harden, George and Kawhi get things starter from the tip with Zubac down low and Terrance Mann working the perimeter.
NBA Standings
Taking a look at the standings in both conferences, we see both of these teams hovering in the middle of the playoff picture. The Pacers goal will be to catch up to the teams in the top four of the East, but they have their work cut out, currently three games behind the 4th placed Knicks, and just a half game over the Heat and the Sixers who are looking to jump them and avoid the Play-In Tournament. Meanwhile, the fourth placed Clippers are holding off the Pelicans who are just a half game back in the standings. Jumping into the top three is likely going to be tough seeing as the Thunder, Nuggets and T’Wolves are in a three team race for the one seed. The Clippers and Pelicans are going to be locked in a two team race for the 4th spot while rest of the pack will be fighting for the 6th seed which guarantees an automatic playoff birth.
Return of Russ
The Clippers key to success from here until the rest of the season is going to depend on how healthy they are. This is a team that has seen their two stars, Paul George and Kawhi Leonard hampered by injuries for the last few years. They showed just how good they can be during a long stretch of the season in which everyone was healthy and it seems like their starts are finding their fitness at the right time. Kawhi had a scare as his back spasms flared up a couple weeks ago, but he has over come that, and seems to be 100% for the final stretch of the regular season. Russell Westbrook is also set to make his return to action tonight after breaking his hand just over three weeks ago. While he may not be starting for the Clippers his energy off the bench and ability to lead the second unit has been crucial for the Clippers this season.
Siakam settling in nicely
The Pacers have a young crop of talent that is going to be a problem in the Eastern Conference for years to come. They were already a team chalked full of talent, led by Tyrese Haliburton, but the trade that brought Pascal Siakam to town makes them even more of an immediate threat to the top teams in the East. Since joining the Pacers, he is averaging 21.4 points, 8 rebounds and 4.1 assists and adds another added dimension to an already dangerous team in an Eastern Conference that is wide open.
Clippers last game
The Clips returned home after two games in Portland, and were stunned by a Philadelphia 76ers that traded James Harden to LA at the beginning of the season. Philly was without Joel Embiid, but Tyrese Maxey and Tobias Harris picked up the slack scoring 24 each, and Cam Payne adding 23 in a game that the Sixers jumped out to a double digit lead in the first quarter. That would stretch to 17 in the second, but the Clips made a brief comeback on the heels of James Harden’s 12 and 14 assists, but the Sixers responded going up 20 in the 4th quarter and handing the Clips their third loss in the last five games.
Pacers last game
The Pacers were in LA last night for the front end of a back-to-back series, and both teams put on a show. The fireworks started early and didn’t slow down for the rest of the night, as there were almost 300 points scored. Anthony Davis and Pascal Siakam went blow for blow, both registering a 36 point double-double but it was the Lakers that pulled through in the fourth quarter of the shootout from Crypto.com Arena. LA had four players score over 25 points, and took the lead after halftime which they carried to the finish line.
