Phoenix Suns 112 vs 123 Golden State Warriors summary: stats and highlights | NBA
The Golden State Warriors looked like the Golden State Warriors that won the NBA title last year in their win over the Phoenix Suns on Monday night. Klay Thompson exploded out of the gate and ended the night with 38 points in the 123-112 victory.
Thompson’s blistering beginning
There were questions surrounding the Warriors after the return of Steph Curry. Following his injury that kept him out for over a month. Golden State lost three straight once their sharp shooter came back, and in a jam packed Western Conference losing streaks can cost you dearly. They returned home over the weekend and got a big win over the league leading Milwaukee Bucks and on Monday night had another test against a team with title aspirations.
Klay Thompson wasted no time setting the tone against a team which he had a bone to pick. The Splash Brother was tossed out of a game against Phoenix earlier this year, and the Warriors had yet to beat the Suns this season but all that changed on Monday. Thompson shot the lights out as the hosts extended their first quarter lead to 25.
Thompson went for 18 in the opening 8 minutes of the game and hit six of the Warriors eight first quarter threes. After 12 minutes the score was Phoenix 21… Klay Thompson 18. Curry wasn’t shying away either, after having a sensation end to the game against the Bucks he started off playing supporting cast for Klay.
Suns cut Warriors lead from 25 to 3
The onslaught continued in the second quarter, as Thompson scored another 15 to make it 33 first half points, and Curry added another 15 while the Warriors hit 14/21 first half threes.
Golden State could not miss in the first half, but the Suns were just hanging around waiting to make their move. That move would come out of the halftime break when Deandre Ayton and Devin Booker would claw Phoenix back into the game. Ayton was in take over mode underneath the basket using his big body to snatch rebounds and get easy looks around the iron.
While the Suns were heating up, the Warriors stars cooled down. Thompson went to the line early in the third quarter, and missed two FTs, and would not score for the rest of the quarter. Golden State saw their one time 25 point lead cut to three in the middle of the third quarter but that was as close as they would get.
Warriors to hit the road
Jordan Poole and Steph Curry would make sure there would be no late game surprises, as the Suns saw the deficit slip back to double digits. Curry ended the game with 23 points and Thompson scored five fourth quarter points to bump his total to 38 as the Warriors got their eight straight win at home.
Home games haven’t been their problem, their problem has been when they have to hit the road. They will be put to the test as Golden State get set for a five game road trip, that will have a lot to say about where this team ends up at the end of the regular season.
With the win, the Warriors currently sit in 6th place in the West, just a half game back of the LA Clippers, and two and a half games back of the Phoenix Suns who hold the fourth spot which guarantees homecourt in the playoffs.

With no KD it's Craig and Okogbie who are filling in and looking to make up for some of the scoring that is on the sidelines with Durant injured.
KD back on the sidelines
In a freak accident, Kevin Durant was injured in pregame warmup before last weeks’ game between the Suns and his old team, the OKC Thunder. He had played just three games with Phoenix before that as his debut with his new team was delayed due to a sprained knee that kept him out for over a month. His sprained ankle could keep him out for 2 or 3 weeks, which is time that would have been invaluable to expedite the chemistry between Durant, CP3 and Devin Booker. Reports say he could be out the rest of the regular season, other reports say if the playoffs were today, he would be on the court. These days in the NBA, we are never too certain the extent of an injury, but we can only imagine the extent of the urgency the Suns have to get their newest superstar back on the court ASAP.
West Coast standings
Looking at the Western Conference standings we see the Devener Nuggets at the top of the table with a record of 46-22, despite having lost three straight games. Coming into tonight, the Kings and the Grizzlies are five games back, and the Suns sit right behind them 3.5 games back, with a firm grip on fourth but a ways away from the third or second spot in the West. The Warriors find themselves in that traffic jam from the 5 seed to the 12 seed where just 2.5 games separate all teams. They sit in 6th right now, and would currently make the playoffs without having to participate in the Play-In Tournament but are just a game above the Mavs and T’Wolves in 7th and 8th and two games ahead of the Jazz, Thunder, Lakers and Pelicans who are all at 33-35.
Curry back at Chase
The Warriors are a completely different team on the road then they are when they are in the comfort of their own home. That could become a problem once this team gets into the playoffs, but right now Golden State should be focused on getting to the first round of the playoffs. Steph Curry knows that coming into tonight so he and the rest of the crew will have to be on the top of their game tonight and then worry about their away form on their next road trip.
Book rocking the shorts
Phoenix gave up a whole lot to Brooklyn in order to bring Kevin Durant to the desert. That means in moments like these when KD is sidelined due to injury, it’s even more up to Chris Paul and Devin Booker to step into the spotlight and keep the team afloat while Durant rehabs his injury. Paul is averaging 13 points and 9 assists, while Booker is posting 27.6, 4.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists a night for the Suns.
Warriors last game
For the first time since the Warriors got Steph Curry back, Golden State finally looked like the team that we expect to see at this juncture in the season. After three straight losses since the sharp shooters return, the Warriors returned home and got a much needed win over the team with the top record in the league. Milwaukee took the Warriors to overtime, but Curry was brilliant on the offensive end while his big block late in the game was every bit as important in his side ending their three game skid. Curry had 38 points in the OT win as the defense locked down the Bucks in the extra session, outscoring them 14-5 in the final five minutes.
Suns last game
Phoenix’s four game win streak came to an end over the weekend when they took on the second placed Sacramento Kings in a battle of two teams in the top half of the playoff picture in the West. Sacramento did what they have been doing all season, which is wear down with their endless barrage of weapons. Seven different Kings had double digits as Harrison Barnes led the way with 19 points. It was a one point game with 1:22 to go in the fourth quarter but the Kings hit their free throws and ended the game on a 9-1 run to stretch their lead over the fourth placed Suns to 3.5 games.
We are live from Cali
Hello everyone and welcome to the Bay Area where the Warriors are back at home after getting a much needed win over the Eastern Conference leading Milwaukee Bucks this past weekend. Steph Curry and Golden State hadn’t won since he returned last Sunday, but after a three game slip they are back to their winning ways and ready for another big test tonight. The Phoenix Suns have had a taste of the good and the bad since getting Kevin Durant late in the trade deadline. He has been sensational when on the court, but suffered a set back last week when he was sidelined for a few weeks and now it’s up to Chris Paul and Devin Booker to pick up the slack in his absence.
