Pistons complete stunning turnaround after nearly becoming first-round cautionary tale
Detroit erased a 3–1 deficit with a dominant Game 7 win over the Orlando Magic, turning a near-disaster into a statement about their rising core.
Just days ago, the Detroit Pistons were staring at the wrong kind of history. Now, they are writing a completely different story.
Detroit completed a stunning turnaround Sunday night, pulling away for a 110–94 win over the Orlando Magic in Game 7 to cap a series that flipped dramatically after a 3–1 deficit. It marks the franchise’s first playoff series victory since 2008.
Pistons: From the edge to control
The Pistons were trailing in this series and they nearly collapsed in historic fashion. After falling behind 3–1, Detroit looked on the verge of becoming just the latest high seed to fall apart early. That became an even more real possibility in Game 6, when the Magic built a 24-point second-half lead and looked about ready to close things out.
Then suddenly, everything changed. Orlando’s offense went cold in stunning fashion, opening the door for a Pistons comeback that extended the series and gave Detroit new life heading into Game 7.
A Game 7 statement
Led by Cade Cunningham, the Pistons took control in the second quarter and never looked back. Cunningham finished with 32 points and 12 assists, dictating the pace while taking on the added challenge of defending Paolo Banchero for stretches.
Tobias Harris delivered one of his best games of the postseason, scoring 30 points and swinging momentum with a dominant second quarter. After struggling at times this season to find consistent secondary scoring, Detroit got exactly they it needed when it mattered most. Jalen Duren added 15 points and 15 rebounds, anchoring the interior and helping the Pistons control the glass.
By the second half, the game had shifted from a battle into a celebration. This is a young team that could have folded after falling behind 3–1. A team that watched an opponent take control of Game 6. A team that hasn’t had postseason success in nearly two decades. Instead, the Pistons responded with composure, physicality, and perhaps most importantly, consistency, across multiple games facing elimination.
Advancing to the second round brings a new challenge, with Detroit set to face the winner of the Game 7 matchup between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Toronto Raptors. But now the Pistons are no longer trying to prove they belong. They’ve already done that, not just by winning a series, but by how they recovered when everything started to slip. What comes next will determine how far this run goes.
