Update:

Frustration from a difficult season boiled over Thursday night as Russell Westbrook confronted reporters during a tense postgame press conference following the Sacramento Kings’ latest defeat.

Westbrook challenges media in tense postgame exchange

The Kings fell 133-123 to the New Orleans Pelicans, their NBA-worst 50th loss of the season. Westbrook delivered 19 points and 10 assists but quickly turned the spotlight toward the media when asked about what the team could accomplish in its final 19 games.

“You know, go out, compete. This is the game,” Westbrook said. “You’re a professional. You go out and play, and that’s all you can do.

Then the nine-time NBA All-Star flipped the question back toward reporters.

“What do y’all think, though?” he asked. “Because y’all got a lot of answers, and y’all always be talking.”

The exchange soon escalated into a back-and-forth with several Sacramento beat writers, including Sactown Sports reporter Matt George.

Westbrook challenged George directly, questioning how reporters form opinions about the team when they are not present for practices or internal meetings.

“You make a lot of statements and broad statements that you have no context [for],” Westbrook said. “Are you in practice? Are you at our film session?”

When George replied “no,” Westbrook continued.

“Do you know me?” he asked.

George responded that he knew him only from a basketball perspective.

“No, you don’t know me,” Westbrook said. “You don’t know me, but you make a lot of comments as though you do know me.”

The conversation continued with multiple reporters pointing out the team’s struggles this season. One noted the Kings have spent much of the year near the bottom of the league in both offense and defense.

Westbrook acknowledged the record but insisted that criticism sometimes goes beyond basketball analysis.

“What I don’t like is that I’ve been in the league a long time,” he said. “And we have a lot of young guys on this team… You guys’ job is to talk about the game, what’s happening in the game, not stir up a bunch of stuff that is not accurate.”

The veteran guard, now in his 18th NBA season, said he felt it was his responsibility to defend teammates from narratives he believes misrepresent the work being done inside the organization.

“As a leader of this team, it’s my job to speak up for the guys in the locker room,” Westbrook said. “They see it. I hear it. Because of the comments you guys make, you got guys thinking about a whole bunch of random things that have nothing to do with the game.”

Despite the heated exchange, Westbrook insisted his comments were not about protecting himself.

“No, not for me,” he said when asked whether media coverage has been worse this season. “It’s not about me, it’s about our team.”

Sacramento’s difficult campaign has already eliminated the team from playoff contention, leaving the Kings with little more than pride to play for down the stretch. But if Thursday’s press conference was any indication, emotions inside the locker room remain high as the season winds down.

The Kings return to action Sunday when they host the Chicago Bulls at Golden 1 Center.
