Sixers 112 - 106 Knicks summary, stats, scores and highlights | NBA Playoffs Game 5
These two guys were heroic for Philly on Tuesday night. Maxey had a playoff career 46 points and 9 assists, and had two of the most clutch shots you will ever see at the end of the fourth quarter. Embiid battled through injury, migraine and a brutal Madison Square Garden crowd to force a Game 6 that will be played on Thursday night.
Philly went down five points in the first minute of OT, but Maxey and company came battling back and took the lead with a 9-0 run to take control in the extra session. They completed the miracle and push the series back to Philly for Game 6.
The one thing you can't do when you're up two possessions late in the game is foul, ESPECIALLY, a three point shooter. Mitchell Robinson committed the cardinal sin, Maxey punished him, but the Knicks still had the game in the bag, in theory.
Josh Hart would go to the line and hit just one of two FTs, and Maxey completed the miracle with a logo three to tie the game up and send it to overtime.
This shot from Deuce McBride should have ended it. New York was up by six with a half minute to go, but we witnesses a miracle at MSG. What happened next will never be forgotten by anyone watching this instant classic from New York.
In stark contrast to the first and second quarter where each team dominated for 12 minute stretches, the lead went back and forth for the final 24 minutes. Maxey and Jalen Brunson went toe to toe in a battle that should go down in playoff history. Brunson had 40 points to follow up his 47 point Game 4, but it was too much Tyrese in New York in Game 5.
Joel Embiid has been battling his knee injury all series, and has been visibly affected by a meniscus that is still on the mend. On top of that, he missed shoot around early Tuesday afternoon because of a migraine, but nothing was going to stop the big man from playing in hostile territory. Embiid had a triple double and fought through injury, a cold shooting day and a relentless Madison Square Garden that hounded him all night long. He ended the night with 19 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists. He nearly had a quadruple double if you count his 9 turnovers, but he showed heart, grit and guts in Game 5.
Philly scored just 5 points in the first eight minutes of the second quarter, but Maxey would keep his team in the game cutting their deficit to six points heading into the halftime break.
Maxey's speed was unstoppable for the Knicks defense. He was blowing by everyone and finishing tough lay ups around the rim all night. The Knicks would trail by nine in the first quarter, but went cold for most of the second quarter and lost their lead.
Tyrese Maxey has been the one that carried the Sixers while Joel Embiid recovered from his torn meniscus. Maxey was incredible on Tuesday night, and saved the best for last on a night when his team needed him most.
The Philadelphia 76ers won an instant classic from Madison Square Garden to keep their playoff run alive in a game that they looked destined to lose in the final moments of regulation. Tyrese Maxey was the hero scoring 46 in the overtime thriller, and had a couple of giant threes to keep Philly alive.
It wasn't just Maxey. The Sixers got a little love from everyone in the must win match up from New York. Tobias Harris chipped in 19 points and got things started early as the Knicks came out cold missing their first 8 field goals of the first quarter.

WE ARE UNDERWAY FROM NEW YORK!
Knicks starters
The Knicks have the Villanova trio in their starting five tonight, like most nights with Anunoby and Hartenstein. This is a great team, but they are the best when they are pushing the pace and lighting MSG up with their energy plays. The crowd will play a big part, but Hart, Hartenstein and Anunoby are going to have to bring in tonight if they want to avoid a return trip to Philly.
Sixers starting five
Who is going to help Joel Embiid out? Tyrese Maxey is the most likely candidate but if they are going to win in NY, they are going to need production from everyone. It's Maxey, Embiid, Lowry, Harris and Oubre Jr starting this must win game. Keep an eye on Tobias Harris. He has played well in this series, but he has to play great.
No doubt about Joel
Joel Embiid has been fantastic since his return from a torn meniscus he suffered at the end of January. He is looking as good as he did before the injury early in the season, despite his knee that has yet to fully heal. On top of that, he had a migraine that kept him out of shootaround earlier today, but it should come as no surprise that Embiid is a go for tonight.
Brunson is a go
Jalen Brunson is coming off a historic night for the New York Knicks in Game 4. He did have to go to the locker room in the third quarter in is 47 point performance in the win, and there was a question of whether he will play tonight. Let's be real. It's Game 5, and he is playing. Our Will Allen has more.
Joel fighting for survival
The reigning MVP of the NBA has toughed it out in a situation that forced him to come back to the hardwood sooner than he or the Sixers would have liked. Despite being hobbled throughout the series as he continues to fight through a meniscus injury , he has put up brilliant numbers. His averages in the postseason are right on par with his averages in the regular season, getting 35 ppg and 9 rpg in this series. In the Sixers’ Game 4 win, Embiid had 50 points to carry his team over the the Knicks. If Philly are going to survive tonight, it might take another 50 point performance from their MVPs.
Brunson brewing
Jalen Brunson has gone from living in the shadows of Luka Doncic in Dallas to becoming the King of New York in a matter of a couple seasons. He isn’t on the MVP ballot, but I’m not sure if there is another guy that means more to his team than then the Knicks number 11. The Knicks have become playoff regulars since he has come to town, and now their star has a chance to return their team to a place they haven’t been in over two decades. Before they start thinking about a run to the Finals, New York will have to get through the Sixers tonight, or in one of the next three games (should Philly force their hand).
Game 4 recap
The Sixers jumped out to the early lead thanks to a quick start from Joel Embiid and Tobias Harris who helped stretch the advantage to 10 at the end of the first quarter. It wouldn’t be long before Jalen Brunson lifted his team in the second quarter. The game would go back and forth in a defensive, low scoring game in which everyone except for Brunson struggled to score. The former Dallas Maverick turned NYC superhero had 47 of the Knicks 97 points. New York led by one heading into the fourth quarter in what was a back and forth final 24 minutes from Wells Fargo Center. It was the defense that sealed the deal for NY in the fourth quarter, allowing the Sixers to just 16 points in their Game 4 win.
We are live from NYC
Hello everyone and welcome to the Big Apple where Jalen Brunson and the Knicks are back at home and want to wrap things up in their first round series against the Sixers tonight and avoid a return trip to Philly.
