Update:

The San Antonio Spurs have secured the services of De’Aaron Fox by agreeing a new four-year, maximum contract extension worth $229 million.

Fox joined the Spurs in February in a deadline day trade. He left the Sacramento Kings, who had drafted him in 2017 and whom Fox led to the postseason for the first time since 2006.

Despite his successes in Sacramento, Fox reiterated his desire to move to San Antonio and denied that he had ever considered going elsewhere.

He told reporters: “There was one team. I wanted to go to San Antonio. So, a lot of people are mad at me, saying I handcuffed the team by giving them a destination. Well, this is my career. If anybody else is in my position, you’d do the same thing. It’s not my job to help build your team. I’m not about to just go where they want me to go. I wanted to have a destination.”

The new deal for Fox has no player option but it does keep him with the team through the 2029/30 season, at least. He was eager to remain with a talented Spurs team that looks set up to challenge for championships with a young core.

Fox joins Victor Wembanyama, the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year, and a talented backcourt setup. The Spurs took Dylan Harper with the No. 2 overall pick of this year’s NBA draft, joining another former Rookie of the Year in Stephon Castle.

Fox made a promising start to live in San Antonio last season, averaging 19.7 points and 6.8 assists in 17 games. However he lasted little over a month before a tendon injury in his left pinkie required surgery and he was forced to sit out the rest of the season.
