The New York Knicks are the third champions of the NBA Cup after a fourth quarter comeback. New York has been desperate for a title and they got one tonight. It might not be the one they are most interested in but this will go a long way in the playoffs and in the players bank accounts. 

Brunson was named the MVP at the end of the game after 25 points and 8 assists, but it was more about what he did through the entire tournament. 

The Spurs went up by double digits in the third quarter, but Jordan Clarkson had a huge fourth quarter to claw the Knicks back into the game and give them the lead. The bench had 33 points in the biggest game of the Knicks season so far. 

Anunoby had 20 points in the first half as he took some of the pressure of KAT and Jalen Brunson. He was 5/10 from long range and ended the night with 9 rebounds. 

The New York Knicks are NBA Cup Champions after defeating the San Antonio Spurs from Las Vegas. It was OG Anunoby leading the way in the Final with 28 points, but it was Jalen Brunson who was voted as the MVP of the Cup. 

The Knicks got started off with KAT getting on the board first, but NY was down for most of the first half and into the second half.

The two favorites to win the MVP of the tournament are Jalen Brunson (-115) and Victor Wembanyama (+325).

What's at stake

There is not just a trophy or pride on the line tonight. There is a cash prize that goes to each and every player on the winning team. Just getting to the quarterfinals means players from each team get $53,093. The teams that go to the semifinals get an additional $53,000. If you win the Semi final, tack on another $159,000. So the two teams in the Finals have already made more than a quarter of a million dollars. Players from the winning team tonight will make a total of $530,933, and some players like Keldon Johnson of the Spurs knows exactly what he will spend that money on.

Spurs survived without Wemby

I don't want to say the Spurs are better without Wemby, but when he was out for those 12 games the Spurs did just fine. They went 9-3 in those games, and they were 8-4 with him for the first 12 games of the season. To suggest that they were worse off with Wemby would be crazy, but what this period has done is allow other players to find their role in the team while their superstar is on the bench. Stephon Castle is going to be one of the best point guards in the league in no time. Harrison Barnes is the perfect vet that brings experience, defense and three point shooting, and De’Aaron Fox is the fourth quarter closer that took the brunt of the scoring burden while Wemby was sidelined. 

Star watch: Knicks 

Jalen Brunson has been on an absolute tear this year, and he has gone for 35 and 40 points in the quarter and semifinals. Now that he has team in the Final against one of the up and comers in the league he knows it's going to be up to him to carry his team to a big victory. He is averaging 28.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 6.4 assists  this season and has the Knicks rolling in the 2nd spot in the East, behind the Detroit Pistons. 

Star watch: Spurs 

Great news for the San Antonio Spurs, not so great news for the New York Knicks and the rest of the NBA. Victory Wembanyama returned to action after a 12 game absence and helped the Spurs get to the NBA Cup Final. He was out with a left calf strain, but returned for the game against the Thunder, and was greeted to MVP chants by the pro-Spurs crowd in the Semifinal from Vegas. He played just 21 minutes but had 22 points and 9 rebounds. This season he is averaging 26.2 points and 12.9 rebounds in what is looking to be an MVP candidate season. 

History of the Cup

This is the third edition of the NBA Cup, and slowly but surely it's gaining prestige throughout the league and every year more and more people seem to take is seriously. The players without question take it seriously considering they have a financial stake in how far they go in the tournament and players have openly said that is a big motivating factor in forcing them to take this Cup seriously. The first team to win it was the Los Angeles Lakers two years ago with LeBron James winning the MVP. Last year it was the Milwaukee Bucks beating the OKC Thunder with Giannis Antetokounmpo winning the MVP. Those are some big teams and some massive names that have been tied to the early history of the tournament. Tonight two teams and two superstars have their chance to etch their name in the history pages of the NBA Cup. 

How they got here Knicks 

The Knicks were in Group C of the East and may have had a little easier road to the knockout stages of the tournament. They had the Heat, Bucks, Hornets and Bulls in their group and won 3 of those 4 games to set up a quarterfinal matchup up against the Toronto Raptors. They beat the Raptors by 16 and that set them up with a semifinal match up against the Orlando Magic, which they won by 12 points and punched their ticked to their first Final. 

How they got here: Spurs 

The Spurs were in one of the toughest groups in the tournament, with the Nuggets, Rockets, Blazers and the Warriors making up Group C. They went 3-1 through the Group Stages which earned them a quarterfinal matchup with the Los Angles Lakers. They breezed past LA, then met the one loss Thunder and handed the defending champs their second loss of the season and qualified for their first NBA Cup Final.

The Spurs have got through a large chunk of the season and the NBA Cup without the services of Wemby but he is back and hoping to help his team lift the Cup tonight against a New York Knicks team who have won nine of their last ten games on their way to the Cup Final.
