The Golden State Warriors broke the bank to make sure their most important player in franchise history is staying in the Bay Area until 2027. Steph Curry’s staggering one-year extension is more than some teams are paying their entire roster around the major American sports, and we are here to figure out exactly which ones.

Curry staying in the Bay

News broke yesterday of Curry’s jaw-dropping deal that will make him a Warrior for the next three years after signing a year extension for the 2026/27 season worth $62.6 million. The greatest shooter the game has ever seen will be 39 years old when that contract comes to an end.

By the time the 2026 season comes around, there will surely be richer contracts in the league considering the astronomical contracts being signed from one year to the next, but one thing is for sure. The NFL and NBA are far and out the most profitable leagues in the country, which means their players get paid the most.

Curry’s contract is just one example, but Jayson Tatum signed a five-year $315 million super max extension with the Celtics after brining Boston their 18th title. The NFL is following suit. Look at this offseason when both Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence got massive contract extensions worth $55 million AVP (average salary per year). Burrow and Lawrence are great QBs, but they are far from the best in the league.

Steph worth more than some payrolls

Let’s get back to Curry’s contract, because when you compare the one year deal to other leagues around the country, it truly is remarkable. Let’s start with the MLB. Obviously we have some teams, like the New York Yankees and the New York Mets that have payrolls of $300 million plus. Then there is the Oakland A’s who have a payroll of $62,573,269. Yes, that’s the pay roll for the 40 man roster of the A’s and it’s less than Curry is set to make in the 2026/27 season.

The NHL’s “poorest” franchise is paying their players just a fraction more than Curry’s $62 million. The Anaheim Ducks are shelling out $66.2 million in pay roll while the Calgary Flames have a payroll of $67.1 million. Meanwhile the MLS, which is far form one of the most lucrative leagues, is way behind Curry. Inter Miami have the most expensive payroll in the league. With Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergi Busquets it’s no surprise, but what may surprise you is their payroll. The entire squad is getting paid a total of $41.6 million dollars, about 2/3 of Curry’s 2026/27 contract.

The NBA and NFL are in a whole other category, but even with the massive TV rights and ticket sales, the Detroit Pistons have a payroll of $130,348,501 which is just over half of Curry’s contract extension. Detroit’s NFL team have the lowest payroll coming into this season, and $226.7 million but that just goes to show you that the NFL is at a whole different level.

Oh, and just one other point, Curry’s one year deal is worth more than three times the amount all the players in the WNBA combined make in a year.
