Estados Unidos Update:

Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca is making headlines with a record-setting purchase of the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun. According to a report from The Boston Globe, Pagliuca has reached an agreement to buy the franchise for a staggering $325 million, with plans to relocate the team to Massachusetts by the 2027 season.

The Connecticut Sun aren’t just a competitive WNBA team—they’re a cultural icon. They became the first professional sports team in the US owned by a Native American tribe when the Mohegan purchased the franchise in 2003, relocating it from Orlando (formerly the Orlando Miracle) to Uncasville, Connecticut.

The WNBA takes firm stance on moving the Connecticut Sun

Despite the reported $325 million sale agreement, the WNBA has made it clear that relocation decisions are not made unilaterally. In a statement to The Athletic, the league emphasized that any move must be approved by the WNBA Board of Governors, and that Boston is not currently a priority city for expansion or relocation.

“Relocation decisions are made by the WNBA Board of Governors and not by individual teams,” a league spokeswoman told The Athletic. “No Boston group applied for a team at this time, and those other cities remain under consideration based on the extensive work they did as part of the expansion process and currently have priority over Boston.”

The American women’s basketball league will have three new franchises in the immediate future with the additions of Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia. In addition, they have identified Bill Chisholm, majority owner of the Celtics, as a possible interested party in having a WNBA franchise in Boston.
