Update:

The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame is the pinnacle for NBA players, coaches and even referees, and the first member of the class of 2025 appears to have been revealed.

ESPN report that ten-time NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony has been informed that he will join 436 illustrious names in the Hall of Fame. Anthony spent 19 years in the league after being drafted third overall by the Denver Nuggets in 2003. That draft class was one of the most iconic of all time, with LeBron James going with the first pick and Dwayne Wade with the fifth.

Across his time in the NBA Anthony spent eight years with the Nuggets and then seven with the New York Knicks. From 2017 onwards he had shorter spells with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Portland Trail Blazers and LA Lakers. A prolific scorer, Anthony ended his career tenth in the all-time NBA scoring charts.

Why has Carmelo Anthony been picked for the Hall of Fame?

Anthony played the majority of his career as a small forward but was also able to operate as a power forward, using his 6ft 7in, 238lb frame to dominate physically. At his peak he was a relentless scorer and still holds the Knicks’ single-game scoring record with a 62-point performance against the Charlotte Bobcats at Madison Square Garden.

Alongside his scoring prowess, Anthony was regarded as a top clutch player, someone capable of performing in crucial moments with the game on the line. In the 2005/06 season alone, he made five game-winning shots during overtime or in the final five seconds of the fourth quarter.

The great Kobe Bryant once described Melo as the toughest player to guard in the league, while Paul George was similarly effusive in his praise.

“Melo was so good he could get his shot off in a phone booth. He didn’t need much space. So with him, I had to play extra tight,” George explained on Podcast P. “So it was always staying tight with Melo, contest everything. He was so good at creating contact and being physical. I was just going to be in for a long game.”
