The Giannis Antetokounmpo saga is at an end: the NBA superstar has been traded
The Greek leaves the Bucks after 13 years in Milwaukee, where he won the franchise’s first title in half a century and was named MVP twice.
The Milwaukee Bucks have finally brought an end to a saga that had dragged on far too long. Their unquestioned star of the modern era, Greek forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, is leaving the franchise via trade. In a drawn-out race between the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat, it’s Miami that ultimately takes home the prize.
One of the five best players in the world - and a cornerstone of the international wave of talent that continues to define the NBA - is changing teams for the first time since arriving in the United States.
The Bucks have chosen Miami as the destination, a franchise that had slipped into something of a void. Removed from the years when they consistently contended for championships - periods that have come in waves over the past two decades - Erik Spoelstra’s group had recently been overtaken in the Eastern Conference by organizations showing sharper roster-building instincts and more aggressive front-office maneuvering. From that same side of the bracket comes the reigning champion, the New York Knicks, a prime example of that upward trend.
This move represents a fresh opportunity for the Heat to contend at the highest level. It was also part of Milwaukee’s agreement with Giannis: to send him to a destination where competing for a title is the clear objective. Miami had the Greek superstar’s approval as a landing spot. There is also a belief within the organization that his presence can attract additional high-level talent, echoing past moves such as the acquisition of Shaquille O’Neal to pair with Dwyane Wade, or the formation of one of the greatest superteams in NBA history when LeBron James joined forces with Wade and Chris Bosh. The franchise has three championships to show for those eras: in 2006, and back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013. This is yet another bold stroke from Pat Riley.
On the other side, the aftermath in Boston leaves lingering questions - particularly surrounding Jaylen Brown. The proposed package that would have brought Antetokounmpo to the Celtics had Brown as the centerpiece, potentially signaling a split from Jayson Tatum after a decade defined by both sustained effort and success. In the end, nothing changes at TD Garden. In recent hours, reports have suggested this was a unique opportunity, and that Brown will not be actively shopped moving forward.
What do the Bucks get in return for Giannis?
So what are the details of the trade? Miami receives Giannis and Bobby Portis. Heading to Milwaukee in return is a sizable haul: Tyler Herro, Kasparas Jakučionis, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, and multiple draft assets - specifically, the No. 13 pick in the 2026 draft, two unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a pick swap in 2030, and a 2033 second-rounder. ESPN was first to report the framework of the deal.
What has Giannis said?
Shortly before news of the trade - still not officially finalized - began to leak, Giannis posted a message on social media: “GOD, I trusted you at the beginning and I will continue to trust you throughout.” The Greek forward arrived in Wisconsin in 2013 after being selected 13th overall in the draft. Over the past 13 years, he has become the defining player of the franchise’s modern era: two regular-season MVPs, a Finals MVP, a Defensive Player of the Year award, a Most Improved Player honor, 10 All-Star appearances, and nine All-NBA selections, among other accolades. His résumé is extraordinary.
And of course, it is crowned by the 2021 championship - the Bucks’ first since 1971 - where Giannis delivered a legendary performance despite knee issues, leading his team from a 0-2 deficit to a 4-2 series win over the Phoenix Suns. He sealed it with an iconic Game 6: 50 points, 14 rebounds, and five blocks.
