The incredible NBA record that Luka Doncic and LeBron James share

The LA Lakers made a slow start to the 2024/25 NBA season but their fortunes have turned in recent weeks. The Lakers are now playing some of the best basketball in the Western Conference and we are only just seeing the start of the burgeoning on-field relationship between LeBron James and Luka Doncic.

The mid-season trade to acquire Doncic, one of the league’s most creative talents, has been heralded as the most shocking in league history. As the Lakers squeeze the final years of play out of James, they can pair him with a young superstar with a decade at the top level ahead of him.

James and Doncic are not only superstars in the current NBA, but their career output puts them in a category of historic brilliance.

While starring with the Dallas Mavericks, Doncic become only the second player to reach 10,000 points, 3,000 rebounds and 3,000 assists before turning 25. The only other player to achieve that feat? His Lakers teammate, LeBron James.

James and Doncic both impressed in a hard-fought 111-102 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday night. James registered 33 points and 17 rebounds, while Doncic managed a respectable 21 points and 13 rebounds for the Lakers. Speaking recently, James sounded pretty happy with the chemistry forming between the pair.

“I’m a natural-born wide receiver and he’s a natural-born quarterback, so it fits perfectly,” James said. “I’ve been running the floor and running lanes pretty much my whole life, and he’s been throwing great passes pretty much his whole life, so it’s not hard to get a rhythm when it comes to that.

“It’s all about eye contact and him being a great quarterback like he is and me being the recipient of it.”

There had been some concern about James' fitness after appearing to hold his hamstring late on against the Timberwolves. But reports emerged confirming that the issue is nothing serious and LeBron James is expected to play a full role against the LA Clippers on Friday.
