The NBA want their players to keep it clean when it comes to the language they use, particularly in interviews. Kevin Durant and Joel Embiid are among the current stars who have been hit in the pocket for spontaneous profanities, although Anthony Edwards is arguably the present-day “king” of bad language.

On Sunday, the Minnesota Timberwolves star was fined by the league for the second time in a week for using “profane” language in a TV interview following his team’s 113-112 victory over the Houston Rockets on December 27.

The phrase that got Anthony Edwards another NBA fine

In the immediate aftermath of the Timberwolves dramatic win, which they claimed despite being down 16 points with under five minutes go, a clearly pumped up Edwards was asked how good it felt to have pipped the Rockets right at the death.

The 23-year-old paid tribute to his teammates and “some big shots,” and started getting excited as he recalled some decisive plays in the final moments.

After peppering his response with “shit” on several occasions, Edwards let slip the following seven words, which will ultimately set him back $150,000: “I don’t do overtime, so fuck it”. Cue nervous laughter in the TV studio.

Six days earlier, Edwards had been sanctioned to the tune of $75,000 for “public criticism of officiating and using inappropriate and profane language” following Minnesota’s home defeat to the Golden State Warriors on December 22.

The shooting guard had described the referees’ performances as “terrible” and claimed he and teammate Julius Randle were consistently penalised for being stronger than their opponents. “”We don’t get no calls. That’s how I feel about the officials every game we play".

How much has Anthony Edwards been fined this season?

This season, Edwards has also received a $35,000 fine for making an obscene gesture, as well as $14,000 for technical fouls. A total of $224,000.
