In a stunning turn of events, the Portland Trail Blazers have elevated assistant coach Tiago Splitter to the interim head coaching role, replacing Chauncey Billups, who has been placed on leave following his arrest in an FBI gambling investigation.

Who is Tiago Splitter? Here’s what to know
Splitter, a first-year member of Portland’s coaching staff, will take the reins immediately. Reports indicate that Nate Bjorkgren was also considered for the job, but declined, choosing to remain in his current role.
Though new to Portland’s staff, Splitter brings a diverse resume. He previously worked as an assistant in Brooklyn (2019–23) and Houston (2023–24), and last season coached Paris Basketball in France, where he led the club to its first national title. On the court, Splitter played seven NBA seasons, including a run with the San Antonio Spurs, where he won a championship in 2014.
The Blazers’ 2025–26 season already faces uncertainty, and now more than ever, they need stability. Splitter’s first game as interim head coach is expected to be Friday, when Portland hosts the Golden State Warriors.
While the circumstances forcing this change are serious, Portland will now lean on Splitter to steady the ship as the team navigates what could be a turbulent season ahead.
