We’ve become more than accustomed to NBA players being involved in all kinds of crossovers with other sporting stars or celebrities over the years. Most recently, ex-Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos attended Game 4 of the 2024 NBA Finals between the Mavericks and the Celtics, showing his support for Luka Doncic, formerly of the Spanish club. And the Slovenian was also at the centre of a viral moment with Snoop Dogg a few weeks ago, which the rapper has now sought to explain.

What actually happened between Doncic and Snoop Dogg?

The 52-year-old was in the crowd at Target Center in Minneapolis as the Mavericks defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals to reach the NBA Finals. And at the time, it looked as if Snoop had been on the receiving end of some trash talk from Doncic, who was captured shouting “who’s crying now, mother******?” in the singer’s general direction.

Except that’s not quite how things went down, according to Snoop himself. Speaking on the WHOO’S House Podcast, he revealed Doncic had taken aim at a fan sitting near him after he had been hurling abuse at the point guard all game.

“I was there sitting with my boy Jimmy Jam, you know what I’m saying? I was in town, I had a show the next night. I’m a basketball fan. I never seen Luka play live, I wanted to see him get down. Kyrie (Irving) is a friend of mine, just wanted to see some good basketball and Anthony Edwards is a bad mother******.

How Snoop became a Luka Doncic fan

Luka wasn’t talking to me, it was somebody that was talking s*** to him the whole…every minute I was there. He was like, ‘Luka, you crybaby, you cried.’ And then when Luka took the lead, he said, ‘Who’s crying now mother******?’

“I was like, ‘This n***a’s dog. He get down, I like his get down.’ ‘Cause he meets the press. I became a fan of Luka that night, you know what I’m saying”.

Snoop finished the discussion but giving his view on the Mavs’ chances of fighting back in the Finals series against the Celtics, which they trail 1-3 having lost the first three games. “It’s a long series, you never know,” was the rapper’s assessment, although the Mavs will have to make history if they are to clinch only a second ever NBA Championship.
