Washington Wizards on track for worst season in basketball history
The Wizards lost again to Dallas and have hit freefall and are 2-18 for the season so far.
Last season it was the turn of the Detroit Pistons who went through a dramatic losing streak in November and December and ended up tying with Philadelphia. In both 2014–15 and 2015–16, the 76ers managed to put together a losing streak of 28 games which the 2024 Pistons managed to equal.
Fast forward to the 2024-25 season and the baton has been handed to the Wizards with Brian Keefe’s team on the skids. As the season enters December, the Washington DC side have lost 16 games in a row and have only recorded two wins all season with both coming against the Hawks.
This 2-18 record represents a 10% win rate and the progression for the season total of 82 games suggests that the Wizards are on track to deliver the worst percentage in history, an NBA record that no-one wants. The Charlotte Hornets of 2011-12 were left at 7-59 after 66 games, 10.6 percent.
The only crumb of consolation for the Wizards is that they will have first pick in the Draft which points to Blue Devils guard Cooper Flagg. The Utah Jazz are two wins ahead of Washington and both the Pelicans and Sixers have recorded five wins in the season to date. The new season is turning out to be a battle of ‘who can be the worst team of the year in the NBA’.
No improvement in sight
The rebuild has not worked since the days of Bradley Beal and John Wall. Slow and fast-cooking formulas, each one more inconclusive than the last, have been used in recent years. Kyle Kuzma, the most recognizable player in these dark days has been put on the market as transferable. Jonas Valanciunas, with two more years on his contract, is another who is more out of the franchise than in.
Saddiq Bey, is injured and without a return date and the younger players such as Carrington, Coulibaly and Alex Sarr have failed to shine and the franchise have five months ahead to address the issue and make sure, that come the end of the regular season, the 24-25 Wizards are not a statistic in the NBA annals.
