Having won everything from NBA championships to Olympic gold medals, and of course a plethora of individual awards, LeBron James has etched his name into the pages of basketball history and then some. Yet, he’s about to experience something that very few of his peers have: Watch his son attempt to do the same.

Bronny James is about to go one better than his father

Despite all the accolades that have been bestowed upon LeBron James, there is one thing that he never managed to achieve and that’s to attend college. With that in mind, one can completely understand the emotion and pride that James is now experiencing after his son, Bronny James, committed to USC Basketball. Indeed, having committed to the 2003 NBA Draft immediately after high school, James skipped his collegiate opportunity and to be fair it didn’t work out so badly. The No. 1 overall pick followed by the affirmation of a Rookie of the Year award after his first season, James made good on his obvious potential and hasn’t looked back since.

Yet, it’s interesting to note the pride he expressed when it came to his son’s entrance into college, something he himself never got to experience despite the countless awards, trophies and millions of dollars in salary and sponsorship. Of course, it’s true that James could in fact attend any college he likes today but given his longevity in the league and his noteworthy philanthropic work, one has to imagine that it’s unlikely that he will find the time to do so in the near future. With that in mind, James couldn’t hide his happiness about his son’s decision and was all too quick to point out how historic Bronny’s decision was.

What did LeBron James say about his son Bronny’s decision?

Speaking after an unexpected blowout win against the Warriors in game 3 of their series - we’ve got to be honest we didn’t see it coming - James was open about the fact that his son had made family history. So much so in fact that he made a point to explain that his happiness would be the same regardless of the result against the Warriors.

“One of the best days of my life,” James said on after the game. “First of all, congratulations to Bronny on his decision he made. I’m super proud of him, our family is proud of him. For me personally, it’s even more special to me because it’s the first time someone out go my family to go to college. Obviously I didn’t go to college. It’s just a proud moment to see my son go to college, and he’s the first one to go college in my family. Super duper proud, super emotional, but just super duper excited and happy for his journey. Today was a proud day. I couldn’t lose today no matter the outcome of this game.”

Will LeBron James and Bronny play together?

With Bronny’s commitment now clear, the immediate focus turned to LeBron’s previously stated desire to play with his son, something that he reiterated following the Lakers’ impressive win in Game 3. On the other hand, the four-time NBA champion acknowledged that his son would have a say in how that pans out.

“I’m still serious about it,” James said. “Obviously I’ve gotta continue to keep my body and my mind fresh. I think my mind most importantly, if my mind goes, then my body will just go ‘okay, what are we doing?’ But at the end of the day, if I am, if I’m not, I’ve done what I have to do in this league. My son is gonna take his journey. Whatever his journey is, however his journey lays out, he’s gonna do what’s best for him, and as his dad, his mom Savanah, his brother and sister, we’re gonna support him in whatever he decides to do. Just because it’s my aspiration and my goal doesn’t mean it’s his. I’m absolutely okay with that. My job is to support my son in whatever he wants to do.”
