The Boston Celtics’ day just got a lot better after the chances of Marcus Smart playing in Game 2 vs the Miami Heat became ‘probable’.

Ahead of Thursday’s Eastern Conference Finals matchup, Boston is hoping to have their defensive player of the year, after missing their 118-107 Game 1 loss to the Heat due his injury.

How did Marcus Smart get injured?

The 27-year-old point guard attained a right foot injury on Sunday during Game 7 of the second round series of the Celtics vs Bucks. Boston then announced on Monday that Smart was listed as questionable for Game 1 in Miami on Tuesday, which he ended up missing.

Game 1 was tough for the Celtics as they didn’t have both Smart and Al Hordford, who was in health and safety protocols, and is still doubtful for Game 2. Additionally, coach Ime Udoka was sick with non-covid illness.

Smart led Boston in assists with 5.9 per game during the regular season, and contributed 12.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.7 steals a night.

In his absence, Derrick White started at point guard but was only able to total three points, four assists, zero rebounds, and zero steals. Payton Pritchard did a better job at taking over as backcourt player, scoring 18 points.

Celtics have confidence Marcus Smart is playing Game 2

We have a lot of confidence,” Celtics center Daniel Theis said Wednesday.
