From his controversial 76ers exit to the fitness struggles that he’s faced since arriving in Brooklyn, it’s been a tough time for Australian star Ben Simmons and with that, here’s a look at his contract situation.

From Past to Present: Ben Simmons’ situation

Drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers as the first overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, Australian born Ben Simmons came into the NBA with high expectations. A talented ball handler who was known for exceptional defensive skills, Simmons’ shot creation capacity would only add to the allure. To that end, the Sixers signed him on a four-year $26.2 million dollar rookie scale deal, however, when 2019 rolled around, Simmons signed a max rookie extension worth $177.2 million to the tune of five years, which was supposed to tie him to the franchise until the 2024-2025 season.

As we now know, things definitely didn’t pan out that way and after intense backlash, for what was perceived as his role in the Sixers’ playoff elimination at the hands of the Atlanta Hawks, Simmons demanded a trade. Following a highly publicized standoff with his team, the 26-year-old was eventually traded to the Brooklyn Nets just before the 2021-22 trade deadline. This of course meant they took on his contract and with it, his cap hit. With that said, let’s get into how that breaks down.
