What records does Klay Thompson leave behind for the Golden State Warriors?
The Golden State Warriors and Klay Thompson have parted ways after 13 years. In that time the Warriors built a dynasty that won four NBA titles.
Klay Thompson was one of the most prized names in this offseason’s free agent market, and after a few days of negotiations, he is set to join the Western Conference champion Dallas Mavericks. After 13 years with the Golden State Warriors, Klay Thompson is on his way out of the Bay, but leaves behind a legacy of titles and records that will stand for a long, long time.
Thompson headed to Texas
The Mavericks and Thompson agreed to a three-year, $50 million contract that will close a chapter of Warriors history that produced one of the most successful trios the league has ever seen. Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson won four titles in a span of eight years, and became the dynasty of this generation.
During his 13 years he went through a whole lot of highs, but there were low moments as well. Thompson suffered an ACL injury against Toronto in the 2019 NBA Finals and would be forced to miss the entire 2019/20 season. While rehabbing from the knee injury, Thompson tore his achilles tendon which would keep him out for the 2020/21 season, but he would return.
After 941 days, Thompson returned to the court and on January 9th, 2022. That had to be one of the sweetest days of his career, but Thompson had plenty of magical nights. Between winning his fourth and final NBA title later than year, and the countless records he broke while wearing a Warriors jersey, he will be remembered for years to come in San Francisco.
Here are a collection of records that Klay Thompson broke in his 13 years with Golden State.
Record for points in a quarter
In 2015, Thompson had one of the most memorable 12 minutes of anyone in NBA history. In the third quarter of a win over the Sacramento Kings, Thompson ignited for 37 points, shooting a perfect 13/13 from the field and scoring all but 4 of the Warriors points coming out of halftime. He set an NBA record for most consecutive three’s made (9) in his incredible run, a record which he would break a few years later.
NBA record playoff threes
2015 was perhaps the peak of the Splash Brother’s illustrious shooting career. Not only did he break the record for points in a quarter, but he also set a playoff record for three pointers made in a game. It was Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals, and the Warriors were down 3-2 to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Thompson hit 11 threes and finished the game with 41 points going 11/18 from downtown to force a Game 7. They would go on to win the series and then beat the Cleveland Cavaliers for the first of four NBA titles in eight years.
NBA record 14 three pointers made
Klay went into the house that Michael Jordan built and put on one of the most historic performances we have ever seen. Steph Curry had previously held the record for three pointers made in a game with 13, but Klay eclipsed his Splash Brother drilling 14 threes on 24 attempts and ending the night with 52 points in just 27 minutes played. Klay became a specialist at scoring at high volume with minimal number of dribbles needed to put up shots.
First player with 60 points in fewer than 30 minutes
The highest scoring night for one of the best shooters the NBA has ever seen came in December of 2016 against the Indiana Pacers. Klay played just 29 minutes in that game, and scored a career high 60 points. He became the first player in NBA history to score 60 points in less than 30 minutes played. Thompson shot 21/33 in the 142-106 win, and what makes the feat even more amazing is he only took 11 dribbles and had the ball for a total of 88.4 seconds.
Ties NBA record 10 straight threes
Thompson’s record as since been broken by Keegan Murray of the Sacramento Kings, but for a while the Splash Brother held the all time record for most consecutive threes made in a single game. In a game against the Lakers in what used to be called the Staples Center, Thompson banged home 10 straight threes between the second and third quarter of a 130-111 win. He ended that night with 44 points, going 17/20 from the field in just 27 minutes.
200 three pointers seven straight seasons
This record is shared between Klay and his Splash Brother Steph Curry. They deadliest shooting duo in the history of the game are the only ones to have hit 200 threes in each of their first seven seasons. The splash brothers revolutionized how the game is played, and won four titles while doing so. Klay’s streak of seasons making 200 threes came to an end in 2022, but that’s only because he played 32 games that season following his two devastating injuries that kept him out for over two years. In those 32 games, Thompson still hit 114 threes, and then drilled a career best 301 in the next season.
