What’s next for Miles Bridges after being charged for domestic violence?

Before the domestic violence accusations against Miles Bridges, the Charlotte Hornets gave him a qualifying offer. What happens now that he’s been charged?

Charlotte Hornets forward Miles Bridges has been charged with domestic violence after physically harming a woman on Wednesday and turning himself into LAPD.

Charlotte Hornets player Miles Bridges’ future in the NBA looked bright. He was the leading scorer for the team, averaging 20.2 points and seven rebounds, and the Hornets had just extended him a qualifying offer, allowing them the chance to match any offer by another team. But that all came crashing down quick.

On June 29, the eve of the NBA free agency period opening, Bridges was arrested after a physical altercation occurred with his wife, Michelle Johnson. Now, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon has announced the charges against him - “one felony count of injuring a child’s parent and two felony counts of child abuse under circumstances or conditions likely to cause great bodily injury or death”. After the initial arrest, he was released on a $130,000 bond.

The details of the case and photos and videos posted on Johnson’s Instagram account paint a disturbing image of the abuse that she sustained in front of their two children. In the post, she included a photo of a medical report, reading “adult victim of sexual abuse by an intimate partner; Physical abuse; Assault by strangulation; Concussion; Fracture of closed nasal bone; Rib effusion; Multiple Bruises; Neck Strain”. The post has since been deleted, but Sports Illustrated journalist Jelani Scott provided a transcript. Here is just part of it:

“A fracture nose, wrist, torn eardrum, torn muscles in my neck from being choked until I went to sleep and a severe concussion. I don’t need sympathy, I just don’t want this happening to anyone else, I just want this person to get help, my kids deserve better.”

What happens to Miles Bridges now?

The Hornets had extended the qualifying offer to Bridges before finding out about the arrest. However, they had until July 13 to pull the offer, and they did not.

The Hornets released a statement after the charges were announced:

Bridges is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday and the case remains under investigation. If he is convicted of the charges, Bridges will face years in prison.
