What’s so special about 2022-23 NBA Coach of the Year Mike Brown?

After guiding his team to their first playoff appearance in 16 seasons, it simply makes sense that the Sacramento Kings coach is recognized for his efforts.

Two wins away from eliminating the defending champion, Golden State Warriors, in the first round of the playoffs? That seems like a good time to take a look at the man behind it all, Kings head coach, Mike Brown.

Mike Brown named 2022-23 NBA Coach of the Year

According to an announcement from the league, Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown has won the 2022-23 NBA Coach of the Year award. Brown, who is in the middle of a postseason run with his team, won the award by unanimous vote. Speaking of that run, this is in fact the Kings’ first appearance in the playoffs since 2006 which only further emphasizes the wonders that Brown has done for the team. With 48 wins on the season, Sacramento entered the playoffs as the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference and are currently leading the Golden State Warriors 2-0. Incidentally, Brown also won the National Basketball Coaches Association’s Coach of the Year award.

Though you may know already, this is actually the second time that Brown has picked up the award. His first time was back when he was head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2008-09 season. Across the campaign, the Cavs won 66 games, while LeBron James was named MVP. Following one more season in Cleveland, Brown was dismissed and found himself in the coaching wilderness. A failed stint with the Lakers, led to a return to Cleveland, which in turn led to a brief stop with the Warriors where he served as Steve Kerr’s assistant. From there, however, it was Sacramento that called and here we are.

What are Brown and the Kings working with?

The reality is the Sacramento Kings are legit. With an average of 118.6 points per 100 possessions, Brown has transformed the Kings into the most efficient offense in NBA history. At this point, the question as to whether the Warriors can overturn a 2-0 deficit becomes less important. Perhaps what it should be is, ‘how far can the Kings go? Regardless of what happens what we can assume is that this hasn’t been a fluke. With players like De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis on the team and a coach like Brown at the helm, there are likely big things on the horizon in Sacramento.
