The 2024 NBA Western Conference Finals will see two of the league’s less prolific teams when it comes to reaching the latter stages of the postseason go head to head, with the Dallas Mavericks going up against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

How many Western Conference Finals have the Mavs and Timberwolves won?

While the Mavs have won two conference titles in recent memory (2006 and 2011, winning the NBA Championship on the latter occasion), they have reached the conference finals on only six occasions, with 16 other teams in the league (both conferences) having done so more regularly.

Those numbers, however, make them look like old stagers compared to the Timberwolves.

Minnesota are still looking for their first conference victory and, as a result, NBA Champiosnhip, although their record is hampered by the fact they were only founded in 1989, which makes them the fourth youngest franchise in the league.

The Timberwolves won their only division title in 2004, which was when they made their sole appearance in the Western Conference Finals prior to this year. On that occasion, they were beaten by the LA Lakers. Can they go one better this year and make history?

NBA Western Conference Finals winners: Lakers lead the way

It probably won’t come as too much of a surprise to learn the Lakers are the most successful team in the Western Conference Finals…and it’s not even close.

A total of 11 teams have been crowned Western Conference champions, with the Los Angeles franchise leading the way handsomely. The Lakers have won a whopping 19 conference titles, putting them well ahead of the Golden State Warriors (seven) and the San Antonio Spurs (six). That’s almost twice as many victories as the Boston Celtics, who have the best conference record in the East (10).

NBA Western Conference titles

  • 19: Lakers
  • 7: Warriors
  • 6: Spurs
  • 4: Thunder, Rockets
  • 3: Suns, Trail Blazers
  • 2: Bucks, Jazz, Mavericks
  • 1: Nuggets

Of the remaining eight, seven are multiple winners. The Oklahoma City Thunder (previously the Seattle SuperSonics) and the Houston Rockets are tied on four victories, one ahead of the Phoenix Suns and the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Mavs have the chance to join them this year but are currently tied on two triumphs with Utah Jazz and the Milwaukee Bucks, the only NBA franchise that has won both Eastern and Western Conference Finals.

The Denver Nuggets, last year’s NBA Championship winners, are the only team with just one title in the West to their name.

As well as the Timberwolves, the Los Angeles Clippers, the Sacramento Kings, the Memphis Grizzlies and the New Orleans Pelicans are still waiting for their first ever conference titles. Along with Eastern Conference franchise the Charlotte Hornets, the Pelicans are the only NBA team that has never reached a conference finals.
