The NBA’s free agency period never fails to generate excitement among fans and experts alike. It’s when some of the league’s biggest stars become available for acquisition. With the 2023 NBA free agency just around the corner, the anticipation is noticeable as fans eagerly await news of which players will be open and where they will end up.

Whether it’s a veteran looking for one last big payday or a rising star seeking a new challenge, numerous players will be highly sought after when free agency begins. We’ll highlight the top 10 NBA free agents in 2023, examine their strengths and weaknesses, and predict where they may end up.

James Harden, point guard, Philadelphia 76ers (Player Option)

Harden’s skills have stood the test of time, making him one of the top playmakers in the NBA today. He excels at scoring from three-point range, near the rim, and at the free-throw line. However, some doubt his ability to perform well in the playoffs, as he has only made it to the Conference Finals once since 2014-15. In the 2022/23 season, he averaged 21.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 10.7 assists per game with a 44.1 FG% and 38.5 3P%.

Possible destination: Houston Rockets, Philadelphia 76ers

Khris Middleton, small forward, Milwaukee Bucks (Unrestricted free agent)

Despite potential implications on his contract’s value, the talented Milwaukee player has recovered from his knee injury. He has been a reliable second offensive option for one of the NBA’s top teams, in addition to his impressive defensive skills. Middleton’s consistent performance bodes well for future all-star recognition throughout his next contract. In the 2022/23 season, he averaged 15.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.9 assists, with a 43.6% field goal percentage and 31.5% from beyond the arc.

Possible destination: Houston Rockets, Oklahoma City Thunder

Kyrie Irving, point guard, Dallas Mavs (Unrestricted free agent)

Without delving into Irving’s personal life, he’s the most sought-after talent in free agency and nearly earned five stars. His skill set complements Luka Doncic perfectly, making him an excellent fit for the Nets. When Irving is on the court, he’s a highly productive offensive player, having averaged 27.1 points over 60 games with the Nets and Mavericks. Additionally, Irving is an exceptional shooter, boasting a field goal percentage of 49.4%, a 3-point percentage of 37.9%, and a free-throw percentage of 90.5%. Although injuries and off-court distractions have plagued him, he’s still a top-tier player. The Mavericks are expected to push firmly to retain Irving’s services, but he may choose to explore other options.

Possible destination: Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers

Draymond Green, power forward, Golden State Warriors (Unrestricted free agent)

Green, one of the hottest unrestricted free agents this season, turned down his $27.6 million player option. Despite his recent altercation with a teammate and reduced stardom, Green remains a top-notch defender. He placed fourth in Defensive Player of the Year voting and earned eighth All-Defensive Team recognition. Additionally, he can play various positions, guard against most opponents, and contribute as a skilled rebounder and playmaker. His fiery personality also makes him an asset in the locker room. Last season, Green recorded impressive stats of 8.5 points per game, 7.2 rebounds per game, 6.8 assists per game, 52.7% field goal percentage, and 30.5% 3-point percentage.

Possible destination: Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers

Russell Westbrook, point guard, Los Angeles Clippers (Unrestricted free agent)

He improved his reputation with an impressive performance on the Clippers team after being blamed for every mistake made by the Lakers. He has a talent for aggressive rim attacks and jump shots, although his efficiency in the latter could be improved. While his style was not a good fit for the Lakers’ shooting-heavy approach, he has shown that he can still create offense and drive to the rim effectively under the right circumstances. While no longer the MVP he once was, Westbrook has been a valuable sixth man this season and is performing well as a starter for the Clippers. It would be wise for the team to consider re-signing him. Although he may not be a superstar anymore, Westbrook remains a skilled point guard who can apply significant pressure to opposing defenses. According to his 2022/23 stats, he has averaged 15.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 7.5 assists, with a 43.6 FG% and 31.1 3P%.
