Another major award for the NBA 2021-22 season has been given out.

The National Basketball Coaches Association has announced that Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams has been named the Michael H. Goldberg NBCA Coach of the Year. He also received the honor last year.

Monty Williams: Hailed by peers

This award is given every year to the person who gets the most votes from the head coaches of all 30 teams in the league, based on how he extracts the best performance from his players, and how he serves the basketball community off the court.

Five other coaches received votes from their peers- Wille Green of the New Orleans Pelicans, Taylor Jenkins of the Memphis Grizzlies, Tyronn Lue of the Los Angeles Clippers, Gregg Popopvich of the San Antonio Spurs, and Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat.

Williams led the Suns to the best record in the league in the regular season, with a convincing 64-18 tally, eight games ahead of the Memphis Grizzlies who came in second. The 50-year-old has been a head coach for eight seasons, first with the New Orleans Hornets/Pelicans from 2010-2015, then with the Phoenix Suns since 2019.

Monty Williams: NBA Coach of the Year

The NBA will formally announce the winner of the NBA Coach of the Year award as the playoffs progress. This award is given based on votes by the media. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Williams also won this award, edging out two other finalists, Taylor Jenkins of the Grizzlies, and Erik Spoelstra of the Heat.

Williams was a finalist for the NBA Coach of the Year award last year, but was eventually bested by Tom Thibodeau of the New York Knicks.
