Fame as an NBA player brings with it a lot of riches, glamor, and perks, but it also brings with it a lot of pressure.

In the case of Tyrell Terry, chosen by the Dallas Mavericks as the 31st overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, the sport that he loved ended up giving him so much anxiety that he decided to announce his retirement from it at the age of 22.

In an Instagram post, he announced that he was leaving the game that had been inextricably linked with who he was, because it was also bringing him to some very difficult moments in his life.

Tyrell Terry: Basketball began to destroy me

“Today I decided to let go of the game that has formed a large part of my identity. Something that has guided my path since I took my first steps,” Terry wrote.

“While I have achieved amazing accomplishments, created unforgettable memories, and made lifelong friends… I’ve also experienced the darkest times of my life. To the point where instead of building me up, it began to destroy me.”

He says that while he is grateful for all the good things the sport has given him, he also realizes that it has given him so much anxiety to the point where he has fallen out of love with basketball.

Terry: DeLaSalle Star

Terry started winning basketball championships in high school, when he played for DeLaSalle in Minneapolis.

He then played for Stanford University, and after a breakout freshman year, he caught the eye of NBA scouts. The young player reportedly broke a record for IQ tests conducted by some front offices in the 2020 offseason.

Terry declared for the 2020 draft, where the Mavs picked him in the second round. They waived him after less than a year, after which he signed up with the Memphis Grizzlies, who in turn waived him in the middle of this year.
