The Utah Jazz have just completed the last big step in the rebuild of their team by trading Donovan Mitchell to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

According to multiple reports, the Cavs gave up 23-year-old Collin Sexton, NBA All-Rookie first Team Lauri Markkanen, newly drafted Ochai Agbaji, three first rounds (2025, 2027, 2029) and two pick exchanges (2026, 2028) to acquire the 25-year-old.

Utah intent on rebuilding

The Jazz executed the trade despite the star having three more years remaining on his contract, which also provides for a player option for a fourth.

To make the trade work in terms of salary, Cleveland executed a sign-and-trade deal with Sexton. According to ESPN, the shooting guard’s new agreement is for four years and $72 million guaranteed.

The Utah Jazz entered all-out rebuilding mode after trading All-Star center Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves. They then sought to trade Mitchell to the New York Knicks, but without success.

Settling the matter of where the shooting guard will go has answered one of the big questions of the NBA offseason.

The future is young for Cleveland and Utah

Mitchell joins a talented young group that includes 21-year-old power forward Evan Mobley, 22-year-old point guard Darius Garland, and 24-year-old center Jarrett Allen.

Spida recorded an average of 23.9 points, 4.5 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game during his stint with Utah.

The Jazz, meanwhile, have locked in a lot of promising new blood for the next few years. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, after the trade with the Cavaliers and handing off Gobert to the Timberwolves, the team has acquired 13 protected or “lightly protected” draft picks through 2029.
