Who will win the Starry 3-Point Contest in 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend? Steph Curry has an answer
WNBA and NBA fans will be in for a treat as the best three-point shooters from both leagues will go head-to-head for the first time ever.
With a coming together of the WNBA and NBA, basketball fans are in for a treat this All-Star Weekend. In the three-point duel that will take place between Sabrina Ionescu and Steph Curry, we have a unique moment in which the archaic ‘battle of the sexes’ ideal has no place. This isn’t going to be about a difference in strength. No. It’s going to come down to skill, finesse, and nerve, things that are genderless.
Steph Curry is conscious but confident
“She’s unbelievable. Unbelievable shooter, unbelievable player. It should be great for the game to have a little competition.” Those were the words used by Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry to describe WNBA star and New York Liberty sharpshooter, Sabrina Ionescu. Curry will of course face Ionescu in Saturday night’s 3-point Contest, and by the looks of things, it will be the showpiece event of the night.
While it’s clear that the man widely considered as the greatest 3-point shooter in NBA history respects his opponent, he made it clear that is by no means unsure of what will be the outcome of their clash. When asked who he thought would win on Saturday night, Curry was matter-of-fact in his response. “There’s only one outcome,” told NBA TV. “It’s that I win.”
What did Sabrina Ionescu say?
Here’s the thing: Sabrina Ionescu owns the record for most three-pointers scored in an All-Star Weekend with 37 that she drained last year. The previous owner of that record was Steph Curry with 31. That’s to say she has no reason to be overawed by her opponent despite his impressive NBA résumé. That said, she’s more than aware of who she is up against.
“It’s a blessing to even be in the same conversation as Steph and to be able to see how much he has respected me as a player and a basketball player and a person to want to come out here and do this,” Ionescu said. “He wants to beat me. I can tell you that, he’s not taking it easy. He was out there booing me as I was practicing yesterday and trying to get in my head.” While we’re not sure how to call this one, we’re absolutely certain that it’s going to be a big win for fans of both the WNBA and the NBA. This is after all, a first-of-its-kind moment and that’s a good thing.
