Why are there so many Wingstop memes after the Pistons win against the Raptors?

Detroit finally ended their record-equalling losing streak in the NBA, with many a chicken wing eaten in celebration.

The Detroit Pistons’ long wait is finally, finally over. They may officially be the (joint) worst team in NBA history after losing 28 (yes, twenty-eight) games in a row, but they at least managed to end 2023 on a high by defeating the Toronto Raptors. Wingstop chicken wings all round.

Cade Cunningham stars as Pistons hold on to break record losing streak

Point guard Cade Cunningham led the scoring with 30 points and 12 assists, while some clutch shooting from Bojan Bogdanovic, Kevin Knox and Alec Burks got Monty Williams’ team over the line for a 129-127 victory. The Pistons had been eight points up after the second quarter and did just enough to hold on as the Canadians threatened a fightback in the third and fourth.

With a 3-29 record in 2023-24, Detroit unsurprisingly remain in last place in the Eastern Conference but there has at least been some good news for followers, most of whom are unlikely to look at the standings until their team has posted another few victories.

Detroit’s sponsorship deal with Wingstop

The Pistons teamed up with Wingstop to offer fans a special deal on the fast food chain’s signature chicken wings. Ticket holders get five free boneless wings every time the team wins an NBA game, which, as established, hasn’t happened a whole lot in recent weeks and months. The free publicity Wingstop were after hasn’t materialised, while match-going fans have gone home with their stomachs empty (or without having had chicken wings, at any rate).

Until now, that is. The Pistons’ long-awaited victory has led to an inevitable deluge of Wingstop memes on social media, fuelled by Detroit tagging the Texan chain on X as they let followers know the final score against the Raptors.
