Why do the Sacramento Kings light a purple beam in their arena when they win?
The Sacramento Kings have been treating their fans to a purple light show that brightens up the downtown skyline whenever the team notches a victory.
The Sacramento Kings have taken to lighting up four purple lasers on top of Golden 1 Center’s grand entrance to create a beam that brightens the city skyline each time the team scores a victory.
Fans have gotten into the spirit and chant “Light the beam!” whenever the Kings win, whether at home or on the road.
The tradition was introduced on Sept. 16, also known as “916 day” in the city, but the beam first shone after the team won on Oct. 29 at home against the Miami Heat.
The concept of illumination to celebrate a victory is not a new one. Sacramento was inspired by the Los Angeles Angels, who light up the “Big A” sign in the parking lot of their stadium whenever they are victorious. Sacramento expanded on the idea and thought that shining light outwards would be able to draw more sports enthusiasts to the team’s home arena.

The laser lights are a good complement to the state-of-the-art Golden 1 Center, considered one of the best stadiums in the NBA. The one-of-a-kind beam is created with 1,000 watts of RGB laser power created by the best equipment in the world.
Now that the Kings are riding a seven-game winning streak, the city is hopeful that their sky will be lit up all the way to a postseason appearance, which has eluded them for 16 years.
Shooting guard Kevin Huerter, who has been a valuable asset since he joined the team in July, started a social media trend when he created the hashtag ‘#BeamTeam’.
With a catchy hashtag, a victory cry, and a high-powered young core of players, the purple beam might just be lighting the Sacramento Kings’ path to the finals.
