Why don’t the Knicks want the NBA Cup banner?
The New York Knicks clinched the 2025 NBA Cup with a victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night.

The New York Knicks’ long wait to raise a new banner at Madison Square Garden will go on, despite the team’s NBA Cup triumph this week.
The Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs in the mid-season tournament, becoming the third team to win the newly-formed competition. Previous winners the Los Angeles Lakers and the Milwaukee Bucks have each added banners to their arenas, commemorating the achievement.
However ESPN reports that the Knicks have decided not to hang a banner following their win. The last Knicks team banner was raised after winning the Eastern Conference in 1999.
The New York Knicks will not raise an NBA Cup championship banner at Madison Square Garden, sources tell ESPN. The Lakers and Bucks raised banners for NBA Cup titles over the last two years. Knicks will celebrate with home fans Friday.

Speaking after the game, tournament MVP Jalen Brunson insisted that the team would not be getting carried away with the NBA Cup victory. Instead, he said that the Knicks would be focusing on the regular season challenge as they look to make it to the NBA Final this year.
“I don’t think we’re having a parade,” Brunson said. “We’re going to enjoy this. But once we leave tomorrow, we’re moving on.”
So far the Knicks have done well to build on the success of 2024/25, when the team reached the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in 25 years. This year’s Knicks sit second in the East with an 18-7 record, enough to suggest that they can make another postseason run this year.
