Will Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese play at the WNBA All-Stars game?
The Indiana Fever female rookie basketball sensation was the most-voted player in the entire league, receiving 700,735 votes.
The WNBA decided to innovate the format of its All-Star Game with the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in its sights, as in the 2021 season for the Tokyo edition, and the best players in the league against the United States Basketball Team on July 20 at the Footprint Center.
With this in mind, the league announced the players who will participate in the All-Star Game, and rookie Caitlin Clark was selected after receiving the most votes from fans (700,735). The Indiana Fever point guard is the leader among first-year players in points per game (16.2), assists per game (6.9), and three-pointers made (56).
In addition to Clark, the WNBA team will be comprised of DeWanna Bonner (Connecticut Sun), Aliyah Boston (Indiana Fever), Allisha Gray ( Atlanta Dream), Dearica Hamby (Los Angeles Sparks), Brionna Jones (Connecticut Sun), Jonquel Jones (New York Liberty), Kayla McBride (Minnesota Lynx), Kelsey Mitchell (Indiana Fever), Arike Ogunbowale (Dallas Wings), Nneka Ogwumike ( Seattle Storm) and Angel Reese (Chicago Sky).
The USA Basketball women’s team comprises 12 WNBA players who will participate in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in search of their eighth consecutive gold medal. Those chosen are Napheesa Collier (Minnesota Lynx), Kahleah Copper (Phoenix Mercury), Chelsea Gray (Las Vegas Aces), Brittney Griner (Phoenix Mercury), Sabrina Ionescu (New York Liberty), Jewell Loyd (Seattle Storm), Kelsey Plum (The Vegas Aces), Breanna Stewart (New York Liberty), Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury), Alyssa Thomas (Connecticut Sun), A’Ja Wilson (Las Vegas Aces) and Jackie Young (Las Vegas Aces).
How are the WNBA All-Stars chosen?
The All-Star selections were determined by a combination of fan votes (50%), WNBA player votes (25%), and votes from basketball media (25%). In the fan voting portion, Indiana teammate Clark received 700,735 votes, and Boston received 618,680, finishing first and second, respectively. Rounding out the top five in fan voting were Wilson (607,300), Stewart (424,135), and Reese (381,518).
Starters for the AT&T WNBA All-Star 2024 will be determined by the respective head coaches of Team WNBA and the USA Basketball Women’s National Team. If a USA Basketball Women’s National Team player cannot participate in AT&T WNBA All-Star 2024, USA Basketball will appoint a replacement. If a Team WNBA member cannot play, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert will name a replacement.
