Expectation is slowly building ahead of the 2025 WNBA season after the schedule release with 13 teams involved in the championship.

The 2024 season saw both National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) deliver record viewing figures and growth will be the theme for 2025 as the WNBA welcomes its first new franchise since 2008 when the Golden State Valkyries begin to compete next year.

The WNBA are also planning on adding two more teams in 2026 in Portland and Toronto and enjoyed its most-watched regular season with 1.2 million average viewers on ESPN.

The Caitlin Clark impact

The WNBA had enjoyed steady growth in recent years but the surge was boosted as former Iowa State free scoring star Caitlin Clark joined Indiana Fever and her moving to the professional game has been cited as a watershed moment for women’s sport in the United States.

Despite her Indiana Fever side falling short in their quest for success, every game involving the Fever was a sell-out with fans across the country anxious to see the 22-year-old at close quarters.

New franchise in town

2025 marks Clark’s second season as a professional and it will be interesting if her star power endures for another year with next season representing the league’s 29th regular season with a season that commences in mid-May and wraps up on 11 September.

The Valkyries will debut against the Los Angeles Sparks, with the Atlanta Dream visiting the Washington Mystics and the Minnesota Lynx visiting the Dallas Wings on opening night.

The defending champion New York Liberty will begin the season at home against the Las Vegas Aces on the May 17 opening night.

The dates released Monday also include a 17-day period in June for the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup, as well as the All-Star Game on July 16 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. This is the first time that Indianapolis, home of the Indiana Fever, will host the All-Star Game.

Fever fixtures

Indiana start their campaign with a season opener against Chicago Sky on 17 May and are at home again for the second test as they face Atlanta Dream.

The third test of the season sees the team hit the road for the first time as the head to Georgia to face Atlanta again.
