Update:

The UConn Huskies are in the Final Four, and it’s not surprising. The women’s basketball team has become the standard in March Madness.

With a record 12 national championships, including last year, UConn’s dominance has defined women’s college basketball for decades. And once again, they enter the Final Four with history and expectations on their side.

The question isn’t what UConn has done before. It’s whether anyone left in the field can stop them now.

Women’s Final Four 2026: dynasty vs rising powers

UCONN has dominated historically, but this year’s field isn’t short on challengers.

The South Carolina Gamecocks have emerged as the closest thing to a modern dynasty, winning titles in 2017 and 2022 and consistently competing at the highest level in recent seasons. They aren’t chasing history. They’re trying to build their own.

The Texas Longhorns bring a different kind of storyline. Texas won its only national championship in 1986, and this Final Four appearance offers a chance to end one of the longest title droughts among elite programs.

Then there’s the UCLA Bruins, the lone team without a championship and the clear newcomer on this stage. Making their first Final Four appearance, UCLA represents the fresh face of the group, with an opportunity to make history.

UConn remains the standard, but South Carolina has spent the past several years proving that the gap may not be as wide as it once was. Meanwhile, Texas and UCLA offer two very different paths - one seeking a return to glory, the other chasing a breakthrough moment.

Will history repeat itself, or is this the moment a new chapter begins? In this Final Four, it’s all about the legacy.
