The new 12-team playoff format makes the seedings even more important this year, with the Power Four champions bagging the top four seeds.

The College Football Playoff selection committee has released the third set of team rankings as we approach the all-important postseason. Oregon are in top spot as it stands and remain unbeaten.

The latest rankings from the selection committee take into account the Week 12 games across the country, with high stakes on every game in this final month of the regular season. The expansion of the College Football Playoff format will see 12 teams make it to the playoffs, rather than the four in previous years.

College Football Playoff rankings: Top 12

  1. Oregon
  2. Ohio State
  3. Texas
  4. Penn State
  5. Indiana
  6. Notre Dame
  7. Alabama
  8. Miami
  9. Mississippi
  10. Georgia
  11. Tennessee
  12. Boise State

With more playoff action and more teams involved the new seeding system is crucial. However the overall ranking is not necessarily the most important metric. The champions of each of the Power Four conferences automatically take the top four seed spots.

Which teams will get a bye in the College Football Playoffs?

The new-look, 12-team playoff is a stark change from previous years and the playoff bracket is not entirely straight-forward. The 12 teams in the postseason includes the five champions of the five highest-ranked conferences, along with the next seven highest-ranked teams.

The top four conference champions will be seeded 1-4 and each will receive a First Round bye. Those First Round games will be played across December 20 and 21.

The quarter-finals will be played on December 31 and January 1, with the two semi-finals taking place on January 9 and 10. Finally, the 2024/25 College Football National Championship game will be played in Atlanta, Georgia on January 20.
