How many times has Notre Dame won the College Football National Championship?
Despite being one of the most celebrated names in college football, the Fighting Irish have struggled to achieve success in recent times.
The Notre Dame football team is one of the most respected and celebrated in the country with the side known as the ‘Fighting Irish’ due to the connection the college had with the Irish Brigade who fought for the Union during the Civil War with brigade member Rev. William Corby eventually becoming the third president of Notre Dame.
The team, currently managed by Marcus Freeman have made it to the Orange Bowl final and on Thursday night at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida will battle with Penn State for a place in the Atlanta Championship final.
In the teams’ 19 previous matchups, the teams have earned nine wins apiece, with one game tied.
Winners of the Orange Bowl on two occasions, the 13-1 Fighting Irish are rated at -118 to beat Penn State, having reached the semi-finals by beating the two-seeded Georgia Bulldogs in the last eight.
Title drought
Since its inaugural season in 1887, Notre Dame has won 11 consensus national championships, including 8 from the major wire service (AP, Coaches’), and has an additional 11 unclaimed co-national champions for a total of 22.
The college has, however undergone something of a drought when it comes to recent glory with the Irish yet to taste championship success in the 21st century with the last win coming back in 1988.
This season, the omens look bright for Notre Dame and should they advance in Florida against Penn State, they would play the winners of the second semi-final (Cotton Bowl) as Texas take on Ohio State.
Monday, 20 January is a date marked in red on the calendars of Notre Dame fans as it’s the very day that could be proclaimed winners at the National Championship Game in Atlanta.
