All eyes will be on Arlington, Texas for this evening’s Cotton Bowl. Ohio State and Texas face off in the second CFP semifinal - the winners will meet Notre Dame in Monday’s final in Atlanta.

The Buckeyes (12-2) are on a roll after defeating one of the big favorites and top seeds Oregon 41-21 in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day.

Texas meanwhile recorded a 39-31 double-overtime win against No.12 seeds Arizona State in the Peach Bowl. Head Coach Steve Sarkisian has led his team to a successful season (11-2), and as the No.2 seeds, they will be a formidable opponent for Ohio State.

This will be the fourth meeting between the two programs. Two of the three previous contests were one-score games: Texas won in 2005 at Ohio Stadium, 25-22; Ohio State won in Austin in 2006, 24-7 and Texas won at the 2009 Fiesta Bowl, 24-21.

How many bowl games have Ohio State played?

This will be Ohio State’s 58th bowl game - and their fourth appearance in the Cotton Bowl. The Buckeyes are no strangers to Arlington - they were beaten 14-3 in last year’s bowl game and will be keen to make up for that. It leaves their Cotton Bowl record at 2-1, having won the 1987 and 2017 editions. Overall, the program’s bowl game record is 28-29, with 34 appearances in the “big four” games.

In terms of national titles, Ohio State have won the College Football National Championship a total of eight times, four of them shared with other programs (1954, 1957, 1961 and 1970).

Ohio State’s first national title arrived in 1942. The team picked up the Associated Press Trophy after finishing with a 9-1 record.

Coach Woody Hayes would guide the Buckeyes to five national championship titles between 1954 and 1970.

Under the previous Bowl Championship Series format, Ohio State lost consecutive National Championship Games in 2007 and 2008. The program’s last national title was in 2014 when Urban Meyer’s team beat the Oregon Ducks 42-20 in the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship final.
