How many times has Penn State won the College Football National Championship?
The road to Championship final sees Penn State Nittany Lions having to negotiate the highly fancied Notre Dame in the Orange bowl final.
Founded 138 years ago, The Penn State Nittany Lions play their home games at the 100,000 plus capacity Beaver Stadium, located on-campus in University Park, Pennsylvania.
The team are on the cusp of glory this season and after beating No. 3 seed Boise State in the quarter-finals and the four-time winners of the Orange Bowl go into Thursday’s game against Notre Dame as +100 underdogs with Penn State having the longest championship odds of all four teams remaining in the College Football Playoff.
‘Crazy season’
“It’s been a crazy college football season, not only for Penn State but really across the board,” Penn State head coach James Franklin claimed when speaking to the media as part of the pre-game build-up. “We couldn’t be more excited to be here and playing in the Orange Bowl, such a historic game. Penn State and Notre Dame got great history together, as well, two storied programs.”
In the overall claimed championship ranking, the side from Pennsylvania can be found in the lower echelons with just the 1982 and 1986 triumphs in the school’s roll of honours.
Should they progress against Notre Dame in the Orange bowl final, Penn State will face the winner of the other last-four clash between the Texas Longhorns and Ohio State Buckeyes in the National Championship Game. This final will be held at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Monday, January 20.
