The Texas Longhorns are gearing up for their 23rd appearance in the Cotton Bowl - no other team has played as many editions of this postseason classic. Ohio State will be their rivals later this evening in Arlington, Texas. The winners will head to Monday’s CFO National Championship Game in Atlanta, where Notre Dame await.

The two programs have faced each other just once previously in bowl games, crossing paths in the 2009 Fiesta Bowl which Texas were selected for to replace Big 12 champions, Oklahoma. The Longhorns won that game 21-24 and their overall bowl game record stands at 33-26-2 while their balance in the Cotton Bowl is 11-10-1.

Apart from that Fiesta Bowl encounter, there have been two other previous meetings - Texas won 25-22 in 2005 at Ohio Stadium while the Buckeyes won 24-7 in Austin in 2006.

As for silverware, the Texas Longhorns have won four national titles and lost in four finals.

The Texas Longhorns win their first national title

The program’s first championship arrived in 1963. Darrell Royal’s team ended the regular season 10–0, finishing as Southwestern Conference champions. Even before their Cotton Bowl clash with Navy, Texas were already deemed champions via the the AP and UPI Polls - the team ran out 28-6 winners at Memorial stadium in Austin to underline their status as champions.

The second national championship win landed six years later in 1969 - curiously, the last time and all-white team were crowned consensus national champions. Texas defeated Notre Dame 21-17 in the Cotton Bowl, ending the season undefeated.

The following year, with Royal in his 14th season, the Longhorns and the Fighting Irish met in the Cotton Bowl for the second year running with Texas on a 30-game winning run as favorites and already proclaimed champions by the UPI (coaches) poll. Notre Dame took the game 11–24. The Longhorns shared the national championship with Nebraska, who defeated LSU in the Orange Bowl later the same day.

Texas would have to wait another 35 years for their next national championship. It finally arrived in 2005 after the playoff format had undergone several major overhauls - the program had also undergone changes, switching to the Big 12 in 1996.

Under the leadership of Mack Brown, Texas won the Big 12 Conference championship and beat the USC Trojans in the Rose Bowl, ending the season unbeaten with 13 wins.

Four national titles and 33 conference titles for the Longhorns, who head into their 62nd bowl game later today.
