Marcus Freeman took the reigns with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish back in December 2021 when he agreed to a five-year contract with the team in hopes of rebuilding their football program.

Notre Dame, as a private institution, did not disclose the exact details of Freeman’s contract. What it is known is that he did earn nearly $6.7 million in his debut year, including a base salary of $5.8 million and additional bonuses and incentives. This made him the highest-paid employee at the university during that period.

Extension for Freeman with Notre Dame

In December 2024, Freeman’s contract was extended for four more years, with an average annual salary exceeding $9 million. This extension came as a reward for his impressive performance, leading Notre Dame to a 29-9 record over three seasons, including two bowl wins and a College Football Playoff berth.

His leadership and coaching style have been highly praised, making him a favorite for the Bear Bryant Award, which annually goes to the National College Football Coach of the Year.

This season, Freeman’s team has continued to excel, finishing the 2024 season with a remarkable 10-1 record. Their success has positioned them as one of the top teams in college football, and they are poised for another deep postseason run.

Freeman has become one of the hottest college coaches around and can add further lustre to his name should his Fighting Irish side beat Penn State in Thursday’s Orange Bowl match-up.
