Ten years after leaving Louisville and 37 years after Providence, Rick Pitino’s return to NCAA basketball has been electric. Just one year into his mega deal at St John’s, Pitino brought them to the brink of 2024′s March Madness. The Red Storm hasn’t made an appearance in March since 2019.

Sporting a supremely impressive career record, Pitino brought the Kentucky Wildcats a national championship in 1996. The first coach to take three colleges; Providence, Kentucky, and Louisville; to the NCAA’s Final Four, Pitino made history by winning national championships at both Kentucky and Louisville.

What are the details of Pitino’s contract?

Rick Pitino and St John’s did a deal last March for a six-year, $20 million contract. This sees the legendary coach average $3.3 million a year, placing him among the top earners in the Big East.

This marks a considerable drop from his days at Louisville, where he banked $7.7 million annually. His total net worth is estimated to be in the region of $45 million.

What other college basketball teams has he coached?

Pitino’s career college basketball record is 834-293, not official. The actual wins by Pitino’s in his NCAA career are 711-290. In addition to leading Providence and Kentucky to championship victories, he is the first coach in basketball history to lead two separate schools to the Final Four.

He coached programs at Boston University, Providence, the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville, and the Institute of Notre Dame. Now Pitino will add St. John’s to his list of schools. It will be Pitino’s eleventh head coaching gig altogether, including stops with the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, Panathinaikos (Greece), and the national teams of Puerto Rico and Greece.
