Update:

The annual college football rankings from The Associated Press have a new name at the top of the leaderboard, the Texas Longhorns.

Incredible this is the first time that the Longhorns have been ranked No. 1 in the preseason rankings, a testament to their impressive recent form. They just managed to edge out Penn State who finished just five points behind them.

Since going 5-7 in 2021, the Longhorns have been on a strong run, winning 25 of the past 30 games. They have reached the College Football Playoff semi-finals in each of the last two seasons and they were ranked No. 1 for four weeks out of five last fall.

“But this is a new year, new faces, new team, and obviously expectations are high for our program,” head coach Steve Sarkisian said ahead of the new season.

“I’m not naive to that. I don’t put my head in the sand, and expectations are very high. But I also say we’re the University of Texas, and the standard is the standard here, and that’s competing for championships year in and year out.”

They will be expected to challenge for a national championship again this year but have a tricky start to their schedule. They begin on August 30 against Ohio State, the defending champions, in a rematch of last year’s semi-final. Last time out the Buckeyes came out 28-14 winners in the Cotton Bowl but the Longhorns have an early opportunity to get some payback this time around.
