This weekend, the top player in US college football will receive the coveted Heisman Trophy as the award celebrates its 90th year.
First awarded in 1935, the Heisman Memorial Trophy to give it its full, official name, is named in honor of college football coach John W. Heisman.
It is annually given to the “outstanding college football player in the United States, whose performance epitomizes great ability combined with diligence, perseverance and hard work”.

Heisman Trophy: How does voting work?
Journalists who cover college football and a selection of around 50 former winners are invited to cast their vote for the best player of the year - and the general public can also take part through via the Nissan Heisman House webpage. Voting opened on Monday 2 December and closed on Monday 9 December.
Last year, LSU Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels picked up the trophy and a few months later was selected second overall by the Washington Commanders in the 2024 NFL draft.

Heisman Trophy: Who are the finalists?
The four finalists were announced on ESPN on Monday: : Colorado CB/WR Travis Hunter, Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel, Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty and Miami QB Cam Ward.
Colorado wide receiver Travis Hunter is the one of the favorites to win this year’s trophy along with Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty.

Hunter finished the year leading the Big-12 with 92 receptions and 14 receiving touchdowns, and ended second in the conference with 1,152 yards.
Ashton Jeanty is the Heisman front runner.

Jeanty meanwhile compiled 2,288 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns on 312 attempts, climbing into fifth on the all-time NCAA single-season rushing list.

Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward completed 293 of 435 passes for 4,123 yards with 36 touchdowns and seven interceptions, helping the team to finish 10-2.

Quarterback Dillon Gabriel was instrumental for the Ducks, who topped the Big Ten with a 9-0 record (13-0 overall). Gabriel finished with a 73.2% completion percentage, 3,558 yards, 28 touchdowns, six interceptions; 192 rush yards and seven touchdowns.

2024 Heisman Trophy: How to watch the ceremony
The 2024 Heisman Trophy ceremony will take place at the Lincoln Center in New York City on Saturday 14 December, starting at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
The hour-long broadcast of the ceremony will air live on ESPN and can be streamed on WatchESPN, ESPN App and ESPN+.
ESPN broadcast team Kevin Negandhi, Holly Rowe and Neil Everett will be hosting the weekend’s events, including the Legends Brunch, which will feature interviews with previous winners.
