March Madness 2024 is officially underway and we didn’t have long to wait for our first major upset of NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament. While second seeds Iowa State, Arizona and Tennessee made light work of South Dakota State, Long Beach State and Saint Peter’s respectively, the South regional tournament threw up a couple of surprises.

Only two games were played in Dallas, Texas on day one but both produced shock results. After No. 11 seed NC State had defeated sixth-ranked Texas Tech 80-67, No. 14 Oakland pulled off a memorable 80-76 win against Kentucky, seeded third.

North Carolina, the No.1 seed in the West regional tournament, had little difficulty in seeing off bottom seed Wagner.

The other top seeds, UConn, Houston and Purdue, all play their first matches on Friday (22 March). The Huskies come into this year’s tournament as defending champions having won their fifth title in 2023.
