Utah vs Penn State: The lay of the land

The Utes come into this one following an impressive win 47-24 win over the USC Trojans in their last game, while the Nittany Lions are fresh off of a 35-16 win against Michigan State’s Spartans. This is all to say, that both teams are brimming with confidence. Against the Trojans, Cameron Rising led the Utes with an eye-opening 22 of his 34 passes completed, to the tune of 310 yards for three touchdowns and no interceptions. On the other side of the divide, Sean Clifford’s 19-of-24 passes for 202 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions were equally as impressive for the Lions. Rest assured, with two talented QBs and receivers who have been willing accomplices, this one could get intense.

Cameron Rising is key

As we mentioned before, Utah’s QB had a huge game in his last outing against a USC team that was led by Heisman Trophy winner, Caleb Williams. Needless to say, that was no small feat but it’s worth noting that Rising has been playing his socks off this season. Indeed, since securing the starting job back in 2021, the signal caller hasn’t looked back and along the way has managed to pick up All-Pac-12 honors. “This guy just battles,” said Utah offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig. “He’s a great leader, great vocal but very positive voice. There’s not a negative tone or anything about that in his approach. ...He’s got great confidence and the entire unit draws from that confidence.”

Penn State’s running game could be the difference

Though quarterback Sean Clifford definitely stole headlines in their last outing, mention must be made of running back Kaytron Allen, who put together a 21-carry, 82-yard game (3.9 yards per attempt), while also registering three receptions for 24 yards. If the Lions are to get anything out of this one, it goes without saying that Allen will have to step up to the plate. Yet, it would be disrespectful not to mention the exploits of KeAndre Lambert-Smith, who caught five passes on six targets for 83 yards (16.6 yards per reception), and scored one touchdown in the team’s last outing. That’s all to say: If they can’t win on the ground, the air isn’t a bad option.

Utah vs Penn State: The Prediction

Here’s the thing: Between both teams, there are very capable quarterbacks, an impressive run game and most definitely solid offensive lines. With that said, Utah has been nothing short of excellent when it comes to preventing negative plays down the stretch. Though they now face the Big Ten’s top pass rush, it’s safe to say these teams are more or less equal in just about every place on the field. With that said, the Utes do boast a slightly better third down average which we believe will make the difference in the end. Our prediction? It’s going to be close, but we’re going with a 31-27 Utah win in the Rose Bowl.
