Every year, the NCAA Final Four sees at least one upset. In fact, without the Cinderella story, where would college hoops be?

An upset might see the number one seed get knocked out, or perhaps the number two falls to a lowly school. Maybe a team outside the top ten will undo the tournament of the number three seed. Those are upsets.

But when you get to the last teams in the competition, generally you expect one of the top three to be in the running.

This year, for the first time ever, there will not be a team seeded in the top three. The highest seeded team left standing is the number-four ranked UConn.

They are joined by joint-fifth seed San Diego State and Miami as well as ninth-seeded Florida Atlantic.

Who is the lowest seed ever to make it to the Final Four?

The lowest seed to ever make it into the Final Four is a record shared by five different basketball programs over the years, who all made it into the last round having been seeded number 11.

The first to reach the milestone was LSU back in 1986, where they ultimately lost to Louisville 88-77.

The Tigers held that mark for two decades before it was matched by George Mason, who made it from the 11th seed in 2006, where they lost 73-58 to Florida.

Then in the last decade, it has been equalled three times. First was in 2011 when VCU made it to the Final Four, then Loyola Chicago in 2018 matched the record, before UCLA did it again two years later in 2021.

Who is the lowest seed to ever win the NCAA Tournament?

While these teams all accomplished the unlikely by making it into the Final Four, none have as yet managed to pull off the miraculous by winning the NCAA Tournament.

The lowest seed to manage that feat was back in 1985, when Villanova came in seeded eighth and pulled off a 66-64 win over Georgetown.

Should Florida Atlantic manage to win it all this year, they will set the new record.
