What does $2bn Big Ten proposal mean for college football?
A ground-breaking new private capital deal could bring in enormous new investment for some of the nation’s most prestigious college football programs.

Some of the biggest schools in the world of college football could be about to get a huge influx of cash as the league ponders a private capital deal.
ESPN reports that the Big Ten is in discussion about a new deal that is expected to bring at least $2 billion in extra funding to the league and its schools. Nothing has yet been confirmed, but there is thought to be widespread interest in the proposals.
At the center of the investment is a ten-year extension of the Big Ten broadcast rights, potentially lengthening the current deal through 2046. This would provide greater stability for the league and its teams but would appear to end talk of a college sport ‘super league’ being formed in the near future.

The new investment could come as part of a major re-structuring of the Big Ten organization. ESPN reports that the new setup could involve the formation of a new commercial entity with the Big Ten, bringing together various streams of revenue from the schools. 'Big Ten Enterprises’ could be introduced to house media, rights, sponsorship and other revenues streams.
In recent years the Big Ten has become a powerhouse of college football, not just in the Midwest but nationwide. Programs like Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State have been joined by newer forces and the conference now stretches from New Jersey to California. The additions of USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington in 2024 reshaped the league, giving it an enormous audience slice.
The Ohio State-Michigan game remains one of the sport’s biggest matchups but the conference has expanded its footprint with matches in Los Angeles, Seattle and Eugene.
With its national reach, stacked rosters and billion-dollar media deals, the Big Ten has positioned itself as college football’s most influential conference. This huge potential investment would only strengthen its position going forward.
