This month, the top player in US college football will receive the coveted Heisman Trophy as the award celebrates its 90th year.
First awarded in 1935, the Heisman Memorial Trophy to give it its full, official name, is named in honor of college football coach John W. Heisman.
It is annually given to the “outstanding college football player in the United States, whose performance epitomizes great ability combined with diligence, perseverance and hard work”.
Heisman Trophy: How does voting work?
Journalists who cover college football and a selection of around 50 former winners are invited to cast their vote for the best player of the year - and the general public can also take part through via the Nissan Heisman House webpage. Voting opened today, Monday 2 December and closes on Monday 9 December.
Last year, LSU Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels picked up the trophy and a few months later was selected second overall by the Washington Commanders in the 2024 NFL draft.

Colorado wide receiver Travis Hunter is the one of the favorites to win this year’s trophy along with Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty.

The finalists for the 2024 Heisman Trophy will be announced on Monday 9 December 2024 on ESPN.
The 2024 Heisman Trophy ceremony will take place at the Lincoln Center in New York City on Saturday 14 December, starting at 8 p.m. ET / p.m. PT.
The hour-long broadcast of the ceremony will air live on ESPN and can be streamed on WatchESPN, ESPN App and ESPN+.
